Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy and Fundoplication Surgery for Achalasia

Achalasia is a rare swallowing disorder caused by a malfunctioning of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS). The LOS is a ring-like muscle at the junction of the oesophagus and stomach, and it is responsible for regulating the passage of food into the stomach. In achalasia, the LOS fails to relax properly, causing difficulty in swallowing and regurgitation of food.

Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy and Fundoplication surgery is a safe and effective option for the treatment of achalasia. It can improve swallowing function and reduce the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux.

How is this procedure performed?

Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy and Fundoplication surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can help to relieve the symptoms of achalasia. During the procedure, the surgeon will make several small incisions in the abdomen and insert laparoscopic instruments to perform the following steps:

Myotomy: The surgeon will cut the muscle fibers of the LES to allow for easier passage of food into the stomach.

Fundoplication: After the myotomy, the surgeon will wrap the upper part of the stomach (fundus) around the lower end of the esophagus and suture it in place. This helps to prevent stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus and causing heartburn.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy and Fundoplication Surgery may include:

  • Improved swallowing function and decreased regurgitation of food and fluids
  • Reduced symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux
  • Minimally invasive approach with smaller incisions, leading to less pain and faster recovery time

Risks and Complications:

Although laparoscopic Heller Myotomy and Fundoplication surgery is a safe and effective procedure, there are potential risks and complications, including:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Damage to surrounding organs
  • Gas bloat syndrome (feeling full or bloated after eating)
  • Recurrent difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) symptoms
  • Acid reflux

Recovery:
