What is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak area in the muscles or connective tissues that normally hold it in place. Common types of hernias include inguinal hernias (groin area), umbilical hernias (belly button area), and incisional hernias (resulting from a previous surgical incision).

Hernia Surgery

Hernia surgery is recommended to repair the hernia and prevent potential complications. The surgery involves reducing the hernia back into place and strengthening the weakened area with sutures or a mesh patch. The procedure can be performed using different techniques, including both traditional open surgery and minimally invasive techniques.

Minimally Invasive Techniques:

Minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic surgery, are commonly used for hernia repair. These procedures involve making a few small incisions through which specialised instruments and a camera are inserted.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Hernia Surgery:

  • Smaller incisions, leading to less pain and reduced scarring.
  • Faster recovery time, allowing you to return to your normal activities sooner.
  • Lower risk of complications, such as infection or bleeding.
  • Less tissue trauma, resulting in less postoperative discomfort.
  • Shorter hospital stay.
