What is GIST?

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are a type of tumour that develops in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, specifically in the connective tissue cells known as stromal cells. GISTs can occur anywhere along the GI tract, including the stomach, small intestine, and oesophagus. While GISTs are relatively rare, they can be malignant (cancerous) and require proper diagnosis and treatment.

Diagnosis and Staging:

Accurate diagnosis and staging are essential in managing GISTs effectively. Diagnostic procedures may involve endoscopy, imaging tests such as CT scans or MRI scans, and biopsy to obtain tissue samples for analysis. Staging procedures, such as endoscopic ultrasound can help determine the size of the tumour, its involvement with adjacent organs, and the presence of metastasis.

Multidisciplinary Management:

The management of GISTs typically involves a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together a team of healthcare professionals with specialised expertise. This team may include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and other specialists. By collaborating closely, they ensure comprehensive evaluation, personalised treatment planning, and ongoing monitoring to optimise patient outcomes.

Surgical Intervention:

Surgery plays a crucial role in the management of GISTs, particularly in cases where complete removal of the tumour is feasible. The surgical approach depends on the location, size, and stage of the tumour. Whenever possible, minimally invasive techniques utilised. These approaches involve smaller incisions, leading to reduced postoperative pain, faster recovery, and improved cosmetic outcomes.
