Maintaining regular physical activity is beneficial before your surgery. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercises on five days of the week. Activities like cycling, walking, or swimming are excellent choices. This helps keep your heart and lungs healthy and contributes to your overall well-being.

Good nutrition is essential before your operation, as it can significantly impact your recovery. You’ll receive dietary advice from our dietitian, who will provide personalised recommendations to ensure you’re adequately prepared. In some cases, patients with upper GI cancer may require additional liquid food supplements to meet their nutritional needs.

Yes, if you are a smoker, it’s crucial to quit smoking as soon as you know you are having an operation. Stopping smoking before the procedure can significantly reduce risks during and after the operation, promote faster healing, and enhance your overall health.

Dr. Robertson specialises in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery, which minimises post-operative pain. However, upper GI cancer surgery is still a major operation, and pain management needs to be optimised to assist with recovery. You will be given pain relief medication, which may consist of local anaesthetic infusions, IV pain pumps, and/or oral medications. These treatments work best when taken regularly rather than waiting for pain to build up. Please ensure that you understand all doses and medications before leaving the hospital to support your continued recovery at home.

Surgery involving the stomach may necessitate temporary dietary adjustments during your post-operative recovery. While the specific dietary recommendations vary based on the nature of your operation, here are some general guidelines to consider:

  1. Eat Slowly: Pace yourself during meals to prevent overeating and discomfort.
  2. Chew Thoroughly: Properly chewing your food aids in digestion.
  3. Maintain an Upright Position: Sit upright while eating to facilitate digestion.
  4. Focus on Nourishment: Opt for nutrient-dense foods and beverages. Ensure each meal includes a source of protein, such as eggs, meat, poultry, fish, nuts, dairy products, peanut butter, tofu, or cheese.
  5. Timing Matters: Avoid drinking fluids 30 minutes before and after meals, as this can make you feel too full.
  6. Spice Consideration: Steer clear of spicy and peppery foods in the initial stages of your post-operative recovery.

The specifics depend on your cancer type and stage, along with your unique health and requirements. Surgery may serve different roles, such as tumour removal, cancer assessment, or symptom relief. Your multidisciplinary team will work together to create a personalised treatment plan that best suits your needs.

You will need regular check-ups with our team to monitor your recovery. We assess your health, manage any pain or discomfort, and ensure you’re getting the right nutrition. Depending on the type and stage of your tumor, you may also have surveillance investigations like CT scans or gastroscopies to check for any signs of cancer returning. We also offer support for any emotional or physical challenges you face during your recovery.
